2.5+x+6x=21.75

7x=19.25

x=2.75

2.75+2.5=5.25

I’m not 100% sure but I think it’s $1.13 a pair. Here’s why:

Dress socks (x) are $2.50 a piar more than Athletic socks (y) therefore “2.5 + x = y”

Six pairs of athletic socks (y) are $21.75. There fore 21.75 = 6y >>>> (divide) y= 3.625

Plug in “y” into the first equation >>>> 2.5 + x = 3.625 and solve >>> (subtract 2.5 from both sides) x =$1.125

Round to $1.13 a pair

Let x be the price of the athletic socks. Then (x+$2.50) is the price of the dress socks. The total for 6 x’s and 1 (x+$2.50) is $21.75.

The total price spent is 21.75. Since he only bought a total of 7 pairs you have to divide 21.75 by 7. However then the 2.50 comes into play. You subtract 2.50 from 21.75 to get 19.25. Therefore, divide 19.75 by 7. $2.75 per pair of athletic. 2.75+2.5= $5.25 per dress socks

You first have to give each item a value. Let’s call the athletic socks X and the dress socks (X+2.50).

To set up the equation, you would have:

6X + X + 2.50 = 21.75

Add like terms, to get:

7X + 2.50 = 21.75

Then subtract 2.50 from 21.75, resulting in:

7X = 19.25, then divide by 7, to get X alone.

The resulting answer is 2.75 for athletic socks (X), then add 2.50 to that, to get $5.25 for a pair of dress socks.

Your answer is:

$5.25 for a pair of dress socks.

Hope this helps!

let athletic socks = x

let dress socks = y

dress socks are $2.50 more so..

y = x + $2.50

you also know 1 pair of dress socks and 6 pairs of athletic socks is $21.75… heres the eqution…

y + 6x = $21.75

you now have two equtions to work with…

y = x + $2.50

y + 6x = $21.75

since y = x + $2.50 substitute x + $2.50 into the second eqution…

(x + $2.50) + 6x = $21.75

now solve…

(x + $2.50) + 6x = $21.75

7x + $2.50 = $21.75

-$2.50 -$2.50

——————————–

7x = $19.25

— ———

7 7

x = $2.75

so now to find the price of each sock:

let athletic socks = x

let dress socks = y = x + $2.50

substitute in for x…

let athletic socks = x = $2.75

let dress socks = x + $2.50 = $2.75 + $2.50 = $5.25

athletic socks = a

dress socks = a + 2.5

6a + (a + 2.50) = 21.75

7a + 2.5 = 21.75

7a = 19.25

a = 2.75

dress socks = 2.75 + 2.50 = 5.25

since dress socks cost 2.50 more than athletic socks then

the equation for dress socks is x+2.50 and athletic socks are x-2.50 so 21.75=(x+2.50)+(x-2.50),,PLUG AND CHUG

Dress socks: x + 2.50

Athletic socks: x

1(x+2.50) + 6x = 21.75

x + 2.50 + 6x = 21.75

7x = 19.25

x = 2.75

2.75 + 2.50 = $5.25

(x+2.50)+6x=21.75

7x+2.50=21.75

7x+2.50-2.50=21.75-2.50

7x=19.25

7x/7=19.25/7

x=2.75 for athletic and 2.75+2.50=5.25 for dress socks
