3d – 8 = -6 + d

3d – 8 – d = -6 + d -d

2d – 8 = -6

2d – 8 + 8 = -6 + 8

2d = 2

2d/2 = 2/2

d = 1

a good way to verify your answer is to plug it back in to the equation and see if it holds:

3d – 8 = -6 + d

you got d=7:

3*7 – 8 = -6 + 7

21 – 8 = 1

13 = 1 FALSE

if you try 1:

3*1 – 8 = -6 + 1

3 – 8 = -6 + 1

-5 = -5 TRUE
