Is this a simile?

When the chairs are sat on they make an awful crunch and screech like an animal being beaten.

Translucent plastic covers sit on the heads and feet on the chairs like doilies that sit on an old woman’s dresser tops.

Should I add commas too?

It’s a metaphor because it contains the word “like” before it gives the discriptive doilies that sit on an old woman’s dresser tops. No commas are needed here.

A simile is a comparison of two unlike things, typically marked by use of “like”, “as”, “than”, or “resembles”. Examples may include “the snow was as thick as a blanket”, or “she was as smart as a crow”, or the usage of emotions similes like “madder than a bull” “fast like a cheetah”.

The first one is a simile. The second one is just a comparison.
