they were democratic. But they ran their democratic government differently. For instance the New England Colonies was a Theocracy, which meant that the church controlled the government. The Middle Colonies had their church and government separate. The Southern Colonies were the most inequitable as they were an Oligarchy. This meant that the rich plantation owners controlled the government because they were the only people who could afford to pay for all their own expenses. Even though the three colonies were all democratic they all had contradictory differences. Philosophically all the colonies were essentially the same. They all cherished a new start in life, their own religion, religious tolerance, trade and acquisition land. With the same goals the three colonies ended up principally a contradictory to each other. They all wanted to leave England to get away from the percussion and religious intolerance. But after a couple of years the people were just as intorlent to other as in England. All three colonies all tried to achieve to the same goals in a different way therefore all three colonies were separate and diverse from each other.

The American Colonies

The history of the original 13 colonies is a tangled tale indeed. There are many ways to view the events and, in hind sight, it is easy to think you understand. But no one knew where they were headed at the time and it could have ended up very different.

You are missing something. Did they both have to set up new societies? Grow similar crops? Deal with Natives in a similar way? How about mentions of slavery, up until the civil war period? Literally, think of how life could have been the same in both places. It’s not going to be too difficult.

First list your differences and they will act as a guide to similarities.

A difference would be that some were north and some were south.

A similarity would be that they were on the Atlantic Coast for the most part.

Another similarity is that they mostly fled to avoid persecution in England. Some because of Christian sectarianism, some because they owed money, some came because they were wanted by the authorities.

Another similarity is that they were Europeans. Some English, some Spanish, etc.

Another similarity is that they all wanted to be free.
