Band is the subject of this sentence. It performs the action of decided. Anytime you have an action verb (as opposed to a linking verb) just ask the question who? or what? is performing that action and you will find the subject of that particular clause (or sentence if there is only one clause) . Extract all modifiers and you will have the simple subject. Who? or What? “decided”?….the band. Extract the modifier “the” and the simple subject is band. The subject of the dependent clause at the beginning of this sentence is “skies”. Who? or What? threatened?…skies.

It is a subject because you could put the phrase “the BAND decided to play the concert” before “Even though the darkening skies threatened rain” so it would read The band decided to play the concert even though the darkening skies threatened rain. Then it would show that the word BAND is the subject

there are two prepositional phrases in that sentence darkening skies threatened rain; decided to play the concert. concert and rain are the objects of the preposition, subject would be band.
