IF U THINK UR SMART W/ MATH PLZ HELP W/ THiS!?

Hey guys, I really need your help with this one! I tried to figure it out, but it’s really confusing. Here it is:

Georgia Middle School has 100 students with lockers numbered 1 through 100. One day, Sally walks down the hall and opens all the lockers. Dick goes behind her and closes all the lockers with an even number. Then, Jane changes the situation of the lockers with numbers that are multiples of 3. (Changing the situation means that a closed locker is opened and an open locker is closed.) If this pattern continues FOR ALL 100 STUDENTS, which lockers will remain open after the 100th student walks down the hall?

Explain your thinking giving details, and using both appropriate mathematical models and language. What id the were 500 students and 500 lockers? 1000? Can you find a rule for any number of students and lockers? Explain why your rule works.

So as you can see, I need MAJOR help w/ this homework. If your REALLY good at math, please help me!!! Thanks guys! Luv ya! 🙂

all the odd #’s will remain open except for those divided by three and all the even #’s will remain closed except for those divided by 3.

you get this because all the lockers are first opened by Sally, then when Dick closes all the even #’s. Only the odd #’s are opened and then when Sally “Changes the situation” all the mulitples of three that were opened get closed and all the ones the were closed get opened and in the end only half the lockers are opened……. same for the 500 and 1000.

Hope this helps…let me know if you need more info…..I didn’t try and put together a math equation because it seems more like you need an explanation

Your math teacher must be smoking something to give a question like that! Wow…good luck! When you figure out the answer, you let me know. It requires wayyyy too much thinking!
