1) I keep an informal record of events and thoughts. Somethimes this means simple dates with explanations, while other times I may write a poem, a statement, or a page on my day or thoughts.

2) Numerous reasons. First it helps me to clear my mind and think through issues, questions, or emotions I may have. Secondly, I won’t be here forever and I would like to know that my life and who I was is recorded in some form for my family and and their future families to be able to remember and learn from.

3) I continue for the same reasons as listed in question one and two. It is a great way to record and sort things in your life, head, and heart.

4) Whatever you feel that day or whatever thoughts you have. There have been times when my only entry that day was, “I am too tired to write tonight but I hope for dreams that make me smile.” OR “Another day is gone but I have learned sooo much more than I knew yesterday.” Other times I have written things that happened that were exciting, etc. I recmmend that you just write about your day, your thoughts, dreams, or even questions you haven’t answered yet.

What you write depends on you.

Hope this helps you some.

I keep a prayer and devotional journal

I started over 10 years ago during a particularly stressful period in my life where that days just felt pointless and were soon forgotten

My journaling is sporadic. Oddly, I tend to journal more if I am busier and less when vacationing, etc.

A journal is a record of whatever is important to you on that day or during that period of your life. It’s not for anyone else to read, so it’s really up to you what kind of tool you need it to be…

Good luck!

how empty of me
hi there! I’ve been keeping a ‘journal’ since i was in 5th grade – now i’m 25.

i often write about my feelings and things that i am confused about or wonder about. when i go back and read what i’ve written in the past, i often find patterns in my feelings and behaviors of myself and others – it helps me to figure the outcome of situations.

i continue to write because it is theraputic. it’s like having a friend there whenever i need one. i also find it often humorous and interesting to go back and read the story of my life!

i started writing because i got a really cool lisa frank ‘diary’ for christmas! and then i got going and it became a habit. i don’t write every day, but i used to in the beginning. now it’s just when i have something i need to get out on paper.

i’d advise you to write about your feelings. describe things you see and observe. sometimes i write in letter form like i’m telling everything to someone, sometimes i just write. it’s a good outlet for anger/confusion/frustration – so i write about the men in my life a lot! 🙂
