The key is to read something that interests you, and at an appropriate level. Computer geeks can read a computer manual that will put the rest of us to sleep.

If you like Stephen King movies, read the books they came from.

If you like war stories, get those.

If you like cars, find a book about the history of cars, or something similar.

I read “The Exorcist” years ago. It was really scary and exciting.

My wife and I have been having evolution and Bible discussions. We just read two books that were very good, “The Language Of God”, and “Coming To Peace With Science”. All scientists are not anti-God. Some are very knowledgeable about the Bible, and are good Christians. If this interests you, read those.

If you want to get rich, find a good book about Warren Buffett.

Find something you’re interested in, and you’ll be tough to stop from reading.

Hey Matt T,

I am with Laurence W on this and also want to add the concept of…don’t be afraid of starting out with books that are even beneath your reading level.

Personal experience…I too hated reading all the way until my 30’s. I decided for the concept of being a better example to my kids that I would make the effort. I love history…especially the 1800’s era. I started out with Laura Ingalls Wilder books and have graduated to Dana Fuller Ross and John Jakes. I LOVE reading now. Start small and work your way up.

The Husband by Dean Koontz. Great book, might be a little too long if you have to read three in a short time though.

I would go with “The Giver” like the woman above said.

It’s a good book, not too long.(I read it when I was younger, and didn’t fully understand all of it, but I got it when I re-read it now).

If you like adventure, I’d say 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, it took me about 2 weeks to read when I was in 5th grade?

Yeah, I really didn’t understand some of the stuff, but it was great.

The classics are always a good safe bet. Check out something by Bronte, Hemingway, Steinbeck, Melville, O. Henry, Orwell or even Mark Twain.

Didn’t your school give you a list of books from which to choose?

If not, here are a couple of suggestions:

The Basketball Diaries by Jim Carroll

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
