Metaphor is a type of figurative language that compares two things that are different, but that could have something in common. It’s slightly different from a simile, the difference being that a simile will always contain a word of comparison – those words are “like” or “as.” Example of a metaphor: He’s a snake. Example of simile: He’s as mean as a snake.

Onomatopoeia is the use of words whose sound suggests their meaning (buzz, bang, hiss).

Personification is a figure of speech where you give animals, ideas, or inanimate objects human characteristics. “The old oak tree angrily shook its twisted limbs at the approaching storm.”

Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds within a line of poetry. “Ow!” howled the owl. In this example, I’m combining assonance with personification. In contrast, consonance is the repetition of consonant sounds anywhere within a line of poetry (“the dank dark bank”). Alliteration is a specific type of consonance – it’s the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words (like a tongue twister) (“Tim timed tiny ticks”)
