First, the community’s rules are based on lies. Jonas notice this as he watches the video recording of the release of the twins. Jona’s father sends the heavier newborn twin off to the Nurturing Center and then gives a hypodermic shot into the lighter twin’s head. Jonas with his memories of the dead soldier’s face notice that his father has killed the baby. Now, the real meaning of release is dead for him. Jonas feels betrayed by his father, but the Giver explains that “It’s what he was told to do, and he knows nothing else.” That is how Jonas knows that the community is built on lies; therefore, the community’s rule about liying does not make any sense. (In Addition, in Chapter 9 in his training instructions, he is permitted to lie). Since the people in the community chose Sameness they are not aware of the real meaning of pain, because they have no feelings. They gave up their freedom to think; therefore, they just follow the rules without any concern.

*Jonas learned that the community’s rule of lying is not a solid rule because the community is built on lies.

I don’t remember that ever being all that focused on- him thinking about the lying yes but not him learning anything much about it. Toughie…
