I have a question on my Geometry Honors homework… help?

Find the value of the variable and LM if L is between N and M.

The problems:

1. NL=5x, LM=3x, and NL= 15

2. NL=6x-5, LM= 2x+3, and NM=30.

I understand finding the variable, but what does it mean find LM if L is between M and N? Does it literally mean put L, M, and N together and multiply?

“If L is between M and N” means: __M_____L_________N_____. L is literally between M and N on a line.

1.) NL=5x, LM=3x, and NL= 15

if NL=5x and NL=15 then 5x=15; therefore x=3; therefore

if LM=3x then LM=3(3); LM=9

2.) NL=6x-5, LM= 2x+3, and NM=30

Because L is between M and N, NL+LM=NM.

Substitute the values given in the problem:

(6x-5)+(2x+3)=30

6x-5+2x+3=30

8x-2=30

8x=32

x=4

I hope this helps.
