I have a question about universities and how they come up with your class schedule?

I’m doing one year of community college before I go off to a university and at the community college they give you a book full of classes and times and you can pick what you want to take, how does it work at a university? Thanks!

Typically, just like in a junior college, you pick courses from the schedule of courses (the book full of classes). You’ll want to know what the requirements are for your major are so that you pick courses that will give you credit towards graduation. Of course, sometimes the classes will already be full or aren’t offered during a specific semester. Then, you may have to pick alternate classes or it may take you longer to finish for your degree than you planned. These days many schools let you register online or by mail.

University is the same as community college. You are given a course book either hard copy or on the internet. I went the same route as you and I saved a bundle. Have you decided on your major yet? If so make sure to get a copy of the degree plan from your university and take classes at community that will transfer to university. You don’t want to fall into a situation where you take classes at community and they don’t transfer. Good luck and although college is hard stick to it. Eye the prize having a college degree gives you the opportunity to make more money.

In university, there are two kinds of courses: compulsory and elective.

There are compulsory courses you MUST take to earn your degree. You should fit these courses into your schedule first.

Then you have room for elective courses. These are courses you MAY take because they interest you personally.

Universities have academic advisors or course counsellors who can help you choose courses and arrange your schedule. But I know from experience that they really admire and appreciate students who can figure this out for themselves.
