The expression “elements of writing” really has no objective meaning.

But here’s a good guess.

Writing can usually be analyzed in specific ways.

Plot. What the story is about. The action. Joe Blow walks into the room and turns on the light. A tension is created at what places in the story?

Characters. Who are the people in the story? Are they friendly or mean, likeable or unlikeable? How do they interact. MOST IMPORTANT, how has any character changed in the course of the story, and what had caused that change.

Conflict. What conflicts are the characters up against? Each other? Forces of nature?

Point of view of the narrator. Is the story a very personal account, such as Holden in The Catcher in the Rye, or is the story told from a more distant, even objective, standpoint.

Language. Is the language poetic or is the prose everyday. Is a lot of slang used. Are there a lot of vivid metaphors?

Style of the author. This is closely related to “language.” Some writers, like Hemingway and Faulkner, have a distinct style, a way of constructing sentences.

Theme of the story. What is the overriding theme of the story. ‘Man’s inhumanity to man, “ that sort of thing. Or “man’s HUMANITY to man.”

All fiction writing utilizes features, or elements, that move the story along, add tension, create conflict, etc.

The genre (type) of the story and the personal style of the author determine what elements are present.

Some basic ones are: characterisation, plot development, theme, and conflict.

If you don’t know what these are, there are a billion places on the net to find out. Do a search for ‘elements of fiction’.
