In the first question you are just figuring out the problem till you get it down to its simplest terms, you cant solve it because there is no equal sign in there to compare it to.

First you want to distribute that – sign through the numbers inside the parenthesis. You can imagine it to be a -1 if you want. -1*2x=-2x, and -1*-3 = 3

So now you have 7x-2x+3

Subtract the 2x, 5x+3

Thats as far as you can go 5x+3

There are a couple of ways to solve the second one, i will use cross products

multiply the diagonals; 32(200)=60x, and solve for x

x=106 1/3

So, in 200 seconds she can type 106 1/3 words.

You can also find out how many words she types each second by dividing 32 in to 60 pieces, then multiplying that by 200.

7x-(2x-3)=7x-2x+3 (when brackets are opened, the minus sign in -3 is changed to + 3 [ – x – = + ])

=5x + 3.

2. if she takes 60 secs to type 32 words, therefore in 200 secs:

200/60 x 32 = 106.6666…words
