The actual translation from italian to english marquesa means “armchair”. Since you are reading the bridge of san luisrey I think they are referring to the volcanic group of islands in the south pacific, which is about 740 miles north east of tahiti.

Well, I’m not sure the above answerer is correct. Why would those islands be in a book about Peru?

A marquesa is also a member of the Spanish aristocracy .. the wife of a marques.

If the word is referring to a person, that is probably your answer. Unfortunately, I read the book so long ago, I don’t remember who all the characters were.
