If you’re just asked to simplify and not solve, then there is no setting to zero, just multiplying by distributing. This means that the -4 distributes and multiplies both the x and the 3 to get: -4x – 12

-4(x+3)

Distribute the -4

-4 x X= -4x

-4 x 3= -12

-14x-12

it’s -12 and not + 12 bc. you can’t have two signs so you have to loose the addition bc the answer to -4 x 3 came out negative

Well to multiply 2 numbers together to make 0 [which is what you need] at least one of them will have to be 0. As the -4 is obviously not 0, you will have to make the bracket equal 0.

This means that x must b -3 as -3 + 3 = 0

distribute the -4

-4x -12

set = to 0

-4x -12=0

separate the variables from the intigers by addinf 12 to both sides

-4x =12

divide by -4 on both sides

x=3
