You need to develop a technique for studying for an essay test. It more detailed than studying for a true / false or fill in the blank of multiple choice.

While studying make a “spelling list” of pertinent terms and proper names and proper place names. Learn to spell these terms. This will make you feel much more secure when writing out the answers.

The second study technique is to “second guess” your teacher. Look at the material. If you were the teacher, what question or questions would you ask on an essay type test.

Third: take your “test” for practice. Practice makes perfect.

Study and do this type of work every day. Do not wait and cram the night before the test.

The night before the test just review your study notes and tweak your answers… You will be ready for the exam.

After reading the essay prompt, think carefully about what it is asking you. Most people do poorly on essay questions simply because they do not answer the question.

Make sure you have a point, and make it! Do not let your words trail off to the point that you are talking about something hardly relative to the question.

Keep your answer short. I stick with a decent 3 sentences. The first introduces my answer. The second includes supporting details. And the third connects the supporting details to my answer.

Always use supporting details and evidence (if it is a question about a book, story, or piece you have just read). If you are allowed to have the piece in front of you, use short, direct quotes that support what you are stating. If you do not have the book in front of you, make references to it.

Here’s a sample. I know you probably haven’t read this book, but it will help you see what I mean.

“What is a theme prevalent in My Name is Asher Lev?”

— In the novel, independence is a common theme. When Asher Lev leaves his mother to go to another country in order to paint, he expresses his need for independence and self-expression. As Asher embraces this independence, he breaks away from his family’s ideal for him.

These tips are for short answer essay questions. If you are asked to write a complete essay, the same things apply except length.

Don’t stress too much about it. Your teacher will more than likely explain how they expect you to answer short answer essays and long answer essays. These tips aren’t meant as a substitute for what your teacher explains to you, just as general guidelines.

No one is great at essay questions on the first or second try. It takes practice. By the end of your first year in high school, you should be able to decently answer an essay question. As time goes on and your maturity advances, you will find that it becomes much easier.

During the test:

Try the ‘Dump’ technique. If you’re allowed to, write down EVERYTHING that you know about the topic. Make sure that you include all of the main ideas. As you are writing the essay, you can make sure you plug in all of the right information in the right places.

Before the test:

As you finish a section of the book that you know will appear on a test, try to find the main subjects and their imortances. It will help on the test immensely.

I hope this helps and good luck in high school!!

make sure you write an outline prior to writing your essay. it doesn’t have to be anything intricate. just a layout of what you’re going to say, and where you’re going to put it. if you have the essay question ahead of time, study the material, and perhaps even write a practice essay in your own time. if you don’t have the question ahead of time, you should have a list of possible questions, or a study guide to help you determine what is important to know and what and what isn’t. once you have that information, studying and writing should be much easier.

Don’t waste your time. Do what needs to be done and what will get you a better grade. Make outlines. That is the key to studying well. You’ll have to learn how to take good notes. Don’t write down everything. Ask yourself about each sentence: Is this important? Will I have to remember this? If so, write it down. If not, move on. Pay attention to details.

I have always thought that the best thing to do is just to relax, get good study habits, think about what you are going to say before you say it and you can’t go wrong!

Good Luck!
