how high should you throw a ball so that it will be airborne for 1 sec.?

if you ignore air resistance how fast will it return to your hand (assuming the same tossing and catching distance from the ground)?

9.8 meters would be right I think. Considering that things fall due to gravity at the rate of 9.8 meters/second

The question needs to be broken into pieces.

They ball is “airborne” for 1 second. This means:

One, the ball is going up for 1/2 second; two, the ball is coming down for 1/2 second.

d = vt + (1/2)at2

d= 0*.5+ .5 * 9.8 *0.25

d= 1.225 m

depends on the weight of the ball and the material it is made of
