How do you solve this problem; 5 is 5% of ?
Favorite Answer
replace the IS with an equals (=) sign
replace OF with a multiplication sign (x or *)
replace the unknown with a variable such as x or y
change the percent into decimal form by moving the decimal point two places AWAY from the percent sign (that is the way I always remembered it in school that if you want to get rid of the percent you move the decimal point away from the percent sign, but if you want to make a percent, then you move it towards the percent sign)
Therefore, you should end up with this:
5= .05x
multiply both sides by 100 to make it easier to solve
500=5x
therefore if we divide through by 5:
100=x
5/5 = x/100
You use 100 for the second equation because what you are looking for is the corresponding amount, and all percentages are expressed as something over 100. Percentage, by the way, is the latin for part of one hundred.
And the answer is 100%
Try doinig a couple more of these, because learning how to set them up is going to help you a great deal when you get further into algebra.
10% is 10 so 5% is 5
