This problem cannot be factored. However if it was x^2 – 100 then the answer would be (x+10)(x-10) thus by the FOIL method (First, Outside + Inside, Last) it would be x^2-10x+10x-100, or x^2 – 100.

I’m not entirely sure if you can factor this offhand, but I can tell you how you can try it yourself 🙂

You can use the quadratic equation to help solve for A, B, and C (the coefficients of the equation).

The quadratic equation is:

(-b +- sqrt(b^2 – 4ac)) / 2a

For your equation, A = 1, B = 0, and C = 100. Actually I can tell you now that it doesn’t have any normal roots as the quadratic equation isn’t solvable. Looking at the discriminant, b^2 – 4ac = 0^2 – 4(1)(100) = -400. You can’t take the square root of a negative number.

I believe you can still solve using complex numbers (the square root of -1 is i, I think) but it’s been too long since I’ve done that. Hopefully someone else can fill in that blank.

Good luck!
