My own feeling is that people are no longer as familiar with Shakespeare’s works as they used to be. There was a time when you could make a reference, or a literary allusion, to a Shakespearean play, and people would understand right away. This is no longer true. (The same can be said about the Bible.) People no longer share the same basic cultural “baggage” or set of information, and this can make communication difficult. And yet both Shakespeare and the King James Bible were major influences that shaped the English language as we know it today.

I have no idea what other people feel about Shakespeare.

I, however… Well, for starters, I love the fluidity and elegance of the language, as well as the puns he makes. Shakespeare also tends to write with a point in mind – he doesn’t flounder in his plays. He also has the redeeming characteristic of not always going by the stereotype. (I’m doing the Merchant of Venice now.) On the other hand, his language may be hard to understand because of the change in English over time, though that’s easily solved with the help of a study guide and a good dictionary. Shakespeare is, well, if not so entertaining (although I find it so), very good study material. To quote my teacher: “If you haven’t studied Shakespeare, you haven’t studied English.”

Hope it helped.
