How do I stay organized?!?

Hello. I am a 13 year old boy. School is a hassle.

3 words.

Can’t Stay Organized.

I am supposed to have certain binders for every class, my teachers don’t explain how long we need to hold onto them. My sleeping pattern is all messed up. Sometimes I stay up until 2 AM because I can’t sleep and wake up at 6 AM! I get home from school at 5 PM and fall asleep..wake up at like 9 and have to do lots of homework! I didn’t even do my workbook pages tonight. Please help.

Folders instead of binders. just stash all the stuff that is immediate in the left side and the other stuff on the right. write notes in there saying when stuff is due. Its a compromise between taking out binders every time, but your still doing it all. im 13 too but for gosh sakes go to bed or get home earlier if you want to sleep.

For the binders, you probably need them as long as the class is – i would recommend keeping them, though, because your notes can be useful next year.

As for the sleep – unfortunately, that is a part of being a teenager. However, you CAN help this – no matter how tired you are, don’t go to sleep after school – if you MUST set your alarm so you sleep no more than 1-2 hours.

By doing this, you’ll get your hw done sooner, and you’ll be tired at a “normal” bed time so you can wake up at 6am and not be tired.

Also, try to make a routine before you go to bed, so when you do these certain things in that order your brain and body will associate it with going to sleep.

The final thing is to not stay up TOO terribly late on weekends – stick as close to your weekday sleeping schedule as you can – because you’ll sleep better during the week.

I know all the sleep stuff is hard to do, but you CAN do it, and it will help tremendously,

Ryan you are not alone so don’t get overwhelmed you can get your life in order. You can do it. Some people are just like you and guess what I’m one too!

One thing that helps me is to lay everything out on the table or where ever there is room and sort things out.

Look at each assignment and think which one takes the longest to do and start on that project first. Then work down to the one that takes the least time.

Use color codes..stickers.anything that makes your homework go faster and easier.

Work in a uncluttered place.

Work in a quiet room or play some low soft music if it doesn’t bother you. Some people need a little noise.

When you worry about being organized that is what is keeping you up all hours. But if you make lists of due dates for assignments on a big calendar and hang it someplace where you can see it each day you will find that keeping a schedule will help you the most so you can get your needed rest.

I hope something I’ve said helps you see you can get all straightened out and into habits so you enjoy your classes and also if you can’t understand something then when the teacher is not busy walk up to her and say…”.can you explain to me what this is all about?”…so you don’t get behind in your classwork or homework. Don’t be afraid the teachers are there to help you.

Write to me and let me know how you are doing,

In Hawaii, there are 6 classes for high schoolers, and each student is supposed to have one binder for every class.

In each binder there are 5 dividers: notes, classwork, homework, tests, and projects.

‘Course, here you don’t have every class in a single school day.

Theres a schedule: on Mondays periods 1,2,3,4. Tuesdays: 1,2,5,6. Wed: 3,4. Thurs: 1,2,5,6. Friday: 3,4,5,6.

My advice: Get an alarm clock. Try telling yourself to wake up a little earlier than the time you set, just before you actually fall asleep. See if that works. If it does, eventually you’ll wake up at exactly the same time each day, without the help of an alarm clock (or your mom). Or, at least, near that time.

I’ve heard you’re only supposed to nap 30 minutes a day. I forget why.

Um, also consider that many people’s steam throughout the day comes from even less sleep hours than you get. Thomas Jefferson studied 15 out of 24 hours in the day. He was described as the man who sat tallest and straightest.

Looking at big T.J, I feel ashamed of feeling sorry for myself because of “lack of sleep.”

Think about it. Why do you want to do well in school? What is important? When you have a cause, a reason, that you sincerely and whole-heartedly believe in, you will become passionate. An impassioned person yields results. And you’ll soar above everyone else– in this case, your fellow students. Someone who really cares devotes themselves more than any other person, and obstacles like being tired is easily broken by increased caffeine intake. 😀 And, because you want to be an healthy young lad, get your work done earlier, so you can sleep when you want without worry. Then you won’t have to resort to that method. ^_^ Oh, another method would be plucking your leg hairs (or sawing off a toe. But that hurts, and you might want to keep it on. You may need it later.).

“Please do your homework.”

It’ll help if you tell someone your current situation (not people probably thousands of miles away), so that they can check on you. Don’t suffer in silence. Trust me, if you have someone you care about scolding you, you’ll feel bad for disappointing them. Don’t you know? When you nag someone, things get done. : )

First of all…Calm down and Breathe. The teenage years are and will be the hardest years of your life Trust Me! You need to make a plan even if you have to make a “Planner” or “To do List” write down when you need to do what and stay on schedule. Get off of that going to bed at 5 and getting up at 9 that isn’t good for your body or your mind. Power Naps(20-30 min. naps) are the best way (believe it or not) to get rested and be ready to tackle you hectic schedule. Don’t be afraid to talk to your teachers if there is something you don’t understand ASK? Your grades will thank you in the long run.

How to organize oneself? Good question. You must have self discipline. It’s hard for some people. It is for me at times.

Have ONE book to write everything down in that you must do for the next day. Find a WILD COLORFUL cover if you must. It will stand out amongst the other books you have. Get into a ROUTINE and stick to it.

Be sure to eat the right foods and stay away from caffeine (sodas, etc.) after school. Fruits are good for quick energy after school. Don’t play video games (if you do) after 7PM. These get the mind overactive and prevents the brain from relaxing thus preventing you from sleeping.

Get your parents involved to help you and keep you on track to being organized.

See some links below and don’t get frustrated. Good luck.
