You need to have very good visual reading skills, good spelling and good grammar. For theses, you need to have some knowledge of the subject matter. If it is for publication, you will also need to learn the standard abbreviations/ symbols for corrections.
Keith – may I contradict you and say that much of what you have listed is editing rather than proof reading.
