How do I convert quantities into units?

I seem to have forgotten the processes of converting quantities into units. This is Chemistry and my question is…how do I convert 277 cm to meters?

Please explain in step by step form and as simple as possible.

Thank you.

100 centimeters in 1 meter, or you could say 1 centimeter is the same as 0.01 meters.

Therefore, you go 277 cm x 0.01 m, which comes out to 2.77 m.

Ok so…

1 meter = 100 cm

so in other words… 1cm = 0.01 meters

The “math to the top would be as follows:

1 m = 100cm

1/100 m =100/100 cm <=~divided both sides by 100~ 0.01 m = 1 cm <=~simplify (1/100 = 0.01)~ with that in mind.... now that you have 227 cm and each one of those cm is 0.01 m... you can multiply 227cm by 0.01 getting a final answer.... 2.27 For future reference, you can see 0.01m = 1cm as 1 x 10^2 m = 1 cm 10^2m = 1cm That way... you can just move the DECIMAL of any cm value TWO spaces to the LEFT to the its value in m I hope this helped:D

wow that guy is a jerk. anyways, you can use the train track method.

277cm—/—1m—–/

————/————/ = 277/100= 2.77 m

———–/ 100cm /

So what I did was multiply the #s that were on the top then divide that by the numbers on the bottom. the number that you get after you’re done is in meters, because the cm cancel out so you’re left with meters. there are 100 cm per 1m. I knew this because:

kilo=1000

hecto=100

decka=10

deci=.10 or 1/10

centi=.01 or 1/100

milli=.001 or 1/1000

and make sure that the cm cancel out- if you have this:

277cm—/-100 cm-/

————/————/

———–/–1m——/

then you’re doing it wrong. cm should be diagonal to cm.

You have to know the conversion ratios (how many of one thing equals another) in order to do the problem. You can find any unit conversion online by doing a quick search. For your problem in particular you have to know that 100cm = 1m. You can use this equation in one of two ways

1 = 1m/100cm or 1 = 100cm/1m. To get these two equations you simply divide one side of the original equation,100cm=1m, by the other. For example:

100cm/100cm = 1m/100cm (divide both sides by 100cm)

1 = 1m/100cm (simplify)

Both of the ratios, 100cm/1m and 1m/100cm, equal 1. Anything times 1 is itself so we can multiply anything by either of the two ratios and not change the original value, just its units. Whatever unit you want to change has to be on the bottom of the ratio so it divides out and leaves the remaining unit. We want to change cm so we’re going to use the 1m/100cm ratio. Sounds tricky but watch . . .

277cm /1 x 1m/100cm (multiply 277cm by the ratio)

(277cm * 1m)/(1*100cm) (multiply fractions)

If you think of the units as variables, then when you multiply these two fractions the cm/cm equals 1 and you’re left with m as the only unit.

277m/100 (cancel the cm because cm/cm=1)

2.77m (divide 27 by 100 and you have the answer)

Therefore . . .

277cm = 2.77m
