How do i add footnotes using Microsoft word?

I am typing a research paper and need to add foot notes . i cannot figure out how to do this by placing a small number 1, 2 , 3 etc at the area needed. the only way i know how to do it is just by adding the number but then it looks like a list of items when printed becasue the numbers are same sze as letters. would i just change the font size ? or is there an actual area in word that has this. also are the footnote number supposed to go at teh beginning or end of the sentence?

Footnotes go at the end of the sentence, but just before the period. Go to the toolbar at the top and click INSERT, then REFERENCE, and then FOOTNOTE. Once you choose the settings you want just click Insert at the bottom of the window. Then Word will take you to the bottom of the page where the footnote appears and you can type in whatever reference you need to put there. Hope this helps!

I’m using an older version of MS-Word, but the footnote feature worked the same in previous versions, so it should be similar.

Type the sentence with the reference.

On the “File” line click

(You may have to click on the down menu arrows at the bottom of the list to see Footnote)

Click

The defaults are “Footnote” and “Auto Number”

Click

The program will add the little number for the footnote and take you to the “Footnote” section at the bottom of the page for you to type in your reference info.

To resume your paper, reposition your cursor in the main portion of your paper and continue typing.

click insert at the top of the toolbar

point to reference, then on the drop down menu click footnote

it will then give you the option to select what type you want to use

after adding footnote it will automatically create the footnote or create an end-note page.

If you need help with your writing style type in MLA, APA, etc. in google and it’ll give you several selections to choose from.

Purdue has a good one.

Go to top menu, Format, Font. Superscript will put numbers at top right of text, like for a number that is squared, subscript will put them at the lower right. Check the subscipt box if you want numbers at bottom right, superscript for upper right. They will be smaller. Then you can use View, Header and Footer, choose footer, to put the notes for the footnotes at the bottom. I used a manual typewriter to do this stuff in 1972. Be grateful you don’t have to figure THAT one out. Hope this helps you.

Go to “Insert” on the menu bar, and select “Footnotes.”

Since I don’t know what style of citation you’re using, I can’t really say for sure where you’re supposed to put the footnote, but usually it’s right after the word/phrase you’re citing. I’ve never seen a footnote that precedes the citation.
