It was the beginning of the overthrow of the monarchy and the ruling class that, with the monarchy, formed the upper classes. The proletariat (the common people) were empowered by storming the bastille – it was hugely symbolic as well as being tactical.

At Club Med, in Tahiti,on Bastille Day (July 14) they re-enact the storming of the Bastille with the club employees dressed in the court apparel, located in a Bastille composed of cream puffs. The peasants (guests at Club Med) are armed with bags of icing sugar and sent off to storm and demolish the Bastille. Great fun! It’s followed by a ten course dinner (yes!!!) with champagne sorbet to ‘refresh your palate’ half way through, and a spectacular fireworks display after dark.

It’s a painless way to learn a bit of history…..

To add to the previous answer, the Bastille was primarily a prison of political prisoners (those who wanted change in France). Interestingly enough, because of such rapid changes in political power and ideals, combine with a poor criminal justice system, political prisoners holding completely opposite views would end up as neighbors in places such as the Bastille or the Chateau D’If (prison made famous by the story of Dantes).

Sadly, storming the bastille led to no democracy at all; it led to anarchy and the murder of innocent men, women and children; can you imagine beheading tiny infants and toddlers and 4 year old children as a positive step toward democracy; yet that is what the bloodthirsty cretins who called themselves liberators did.

in fact, democracy never came to france in any form; however, the closest it did come didnot arrive until after all of the various Napoleans were dead and buried and their many kins who were given phony titles on phony thrones all across europe.

it really took world war I to bring anythng close to democracy to france.

The bastille was a great symbol of the first and second estate control. The third estate made up most of the people in France and because the first and second estate made up too little of the population, they couldn’t fight against them. Because of this, the third estate was able to establish their own government.
