How did the reliance on plantation agriculture affect the southern colonies?

It was one of the South’s largest industry. Which means there was a direct correlation between how successful that specific agriculture was and how successful those colonies were at that time. It’s moreso simple economics.

I would guess that the reliance on plantation agriculture made the southern colonies very important to the northern colonies, thus benefiting the southern colonies.
