how did the colonists react to the sugar act?

they were alarmed. they felt that the sugar act took away some of their basic rights. it took away their right to a jury. a lawyer, james otis had stated that they shouldn’t be taxed by the parliament because they had no say in the parliament. the colonist were getting angry. the new york legislature had stated that they would have no happiness, liberty, or security since their colonial life was being interfered with.
