The early Christians still considered themselves devout, practicing Jews. They continued to go to the Temple to pray, to observe the major Jewish holidays, and to be circumcised.

Ironically, it was Paul — a strict Jew educated by the great rabbi Gamaliel — who did the most to widen the gap between Christianity and Judaism. It was Paul who argued that newly baptized Christians should not have to be circumcised, and that the Good News of salvation was for all mankind, not just the Jews.

Jesus Himself, of course, was a Jew. There would not have been a Christian church in the first place if the Jews had not paved the way for its coming. The Torah, the wisdom books, and the writings of the prophets were all used as inspirations for early Christian explanations of who Jesus was and what His message meant.
