“I am a single mom. My ten year old is very bright but seems to be having trouble with math. She is about two grade levels behind and I can not afford those expensive educational programs like Score! What can I do to help her?

You don’t need special programs – do basic math with home stuff.

M*M math – you can separate the colors, line all the red up 2 across, the blue 3 across, the green 4 across, then show how to divide in half, thirds, etc by separating them across.

Work with fractions using kitchen measuring cups – flour, sugar, water, fruit drinks – whatever. Make 2 cups total using ¼ cup, or ½ cups.

Cook with recipes – measure 2 teaspoons with ¼ teaspoon…..

Mental math – in the car drill basics of addition, subtraction, etc. memorization is how to recall the formulas.

Most important is to dedicated time to it every day – not so much that it gets really grating on both of you – but enough to reinforce it.

IF your child has trouble remembering what you’ve taught, patiently try it again. IF she continues to forget things, feed her numbers and ask her to repeat them. 3-2-3, then she repeats 3-2-3, 6-5-2 she repeats 652. when she conquers 3 numbers move on to 4, then 5, then 6. when you get to the level of telephone numbers, she’ll be able to remember more of what she’s learned (because you’ve expanded her memory)

It is very important to help her now. I kept telling my daughter she was really good in math (when she wasn’t all that good in it) – 10 years later it is still one of her strongest subjects and she continues to believe she’s good at it

May be her teacher can recommend someone to tutor her at the beginning of the school year. Like a high school kid after school.

if you can’t afford a tutor, borrow the textbooks (for whatever grade she needs) from the school and tutor her/go through the book to make sure she understands everything.

Ask for help from a child in 5th grade. They will understand their problems more efficiently and will probably work for little or nothing
