Homework Help: What is stigma and what are the signs of being stigmatized?

I have to write a paper based upon the definition of stigma and the signs of being stigmatized, dealing with race. If anyone can help me possible with this definition and maybe a link or two containing info that would be great.

Before someone can be stigmatized, that person must bear some kind of mark — either physical or embedded in behavior, biography, ancestry, or group membership — that makes him or her different from the norm. The individual’s

awareness that he or she possesses such a mark does not mean that the mark will become a stigma. A mark becomes a stigma when someone else notices the mark, views it as important to any interaction with the marked person

stigmatized, stigmatizing

1. To describe, regard, single out, etc someone as bad, shameful, etc.

Thesaurus: disgrace, blame, defame, discredit, pillory, vilify, condemn; Antonym: praise. Source(s) http://www.allwords.com/word-stigmatized…

Seeing as you are already at your computer….why not look it up online? Having said that, I think when a person has a certain stigma or is stigmatized they are more or less sterotyped or seen as a particular type of individual. Again though, instead of wasting your time on yahoo questions (like I am) why not use the computer and actually do your homework as opposed to asking someone to do it for you…..they could be wrong you know!

The historic Catholic Encyclopedia (1910 version) states approximately stigmatics: “None are identified previous to the 13th century. The first stated is St. Francis of Assisi, in whom the stigmata had been of a individual on no account visible ultimately: within the wounds of toes and palms had been excrescences of flesh representing nails, the ones on one facet having circular black heads, the ones at the different having alternatively lengthy facets, which bent again and g.asped the epidermis. The saint’s humility would now not restrict a first-rate a lot of his brethren beholding with their possess eyes the lifestyles of those uncommon wounds in the course of his lifetime as good as after his dying” (14:295).

For definitions of terms the best place to start is a DICTIONARY. If you don’t have one at home (and you should talk with your parents if you don’t – you can get a cheap pocket one for about 8 bucks), you can easily look it up for free online. Here is one of MANY:

Once you get the meanings, you’ll be able to answer the question yourself.
