According to the dictionary, dignity means “worthy of respect.”

So, do you think that having manners and using proper etiquette would make one more “worthy of respect?” And the flip side of that is, do you think that not being capable of using socially appropriate manners and etiquette make you any less worthy of respect?

If you think there is a difference between these two questions, you might be able to write 5 sentences speaking to each.

A person with dignity has manners. You are not degnified if you don’t use manners. A person with dignity is also etiquette. Dignity is the qualiry of being respected and respecting oneself, with nobleness of manners. Manners is a way of holding oneself in social situations. You need to use manners no matter where you are or who you are with. Etiquette is good manners, polite behavior and courtesy. Therefore dignity, manners and etiquette are all linked to one another. If you don’t have manners you don’t have etiquette If you don’t have etiquette you are not dignitfied. If you are not dignified you don’t have manners. One ties into the other like love and marriage. School and education.

Personally, no. I associate dignity with honor, and honor is not the same thing as manners and etiquette. However, I believe that honor, manners and etiquette often go together. Honor is a moral matter. Manners and etiquette are superficial matters. One can be honorable/dignified by sacrificing one’s life for another man, but still forget to tip one’s hat to the ladies (lack of etiquette), and still burp at the table (lack of manners). Therefore, dignity is not necessarily linked to manners and etiquette.

First, to be sure you know what you’re writing about, look up dignity and etiquette.

Now that you have a good handle on what the words mean, do you think that good etiquette gives a person dignity or they can be dignified without good manners? Why or why not?
