hey,u math lovers out there!?
here’s the instructions: Use the distributive property to rewrite the expresson:
1. 9(8+7)
2. 4(x+9)
3. 5(y+20)
4. 0(x+12)
5. r(s+t)
6. 3(5+8+9)
>>>>can u tell me how u got the answer?i’d like 2 learn!;)
Favorite Answer
2. multiply the x and the 9 by 4 to get 4x + 36
3. multiply the y and the 20 by 5 to get 5y + 100
4. since you’re multiplying two numbers by 0 then adding them, the answer is 0
5. multiply the s and the t by r to get rt+st
6. multiply the 5, 8, and 9 by the 3 to get 15 + 24+27= 66
how that works is that the “Distributive Property for Multiplication over Addition or Subtraction” allows you to get rid of the parentheses. Just as an example:
when you have 2(3+4), you could solve it using order of operations (pemdas) and simplify it to 2 * 7,then do that multiplication to get 14, or you can use the distributive property to get [(2*3)+(2*4)]then multiply the parentheses to get 6 +8, or 14.
both ways you get the same answer, but when you have variables (letters) in the problem, you can’t just add the values in the expression. example:
2(x+3) you cant add 3 and x, so you use the distributive property to get 2x and 6, for an answer of 2x+6
The important thing to remember is that the distr. prop. only works when you have multiple values within parentheses SEPARATED BY + or -. ex: 2(2+x) [answer 2x +4] NOT 2(2*3*4) [answer 48, but if you used the distr. prop. you would get 4*6*8, which is totally wrong.]
(X x 4) + (4 x 9)
(Y x 5) + (5 x 20)
(X x 0) + (0 x 12)
(R x S) + (R x T)
(3 x 5) + (3 x 8) + (3 x 9)
Kind of self-explanatory. Make two pairs of parenthesis, put the multiplier in each one, along with a number/letter from the original parenthesis.
EDIT: And to avoid confusion, Avi is incorrect and ajsolo simply answered the equation, rather than putting it in the form, like you want to do.
4(x+9)= 4x + (4 x 9)
5(y+20)= 5y+ (5 x 20)
0(x+12)= (0 x X) + (0 x 12)
r(s+t)= rs+ rt
3(5+8+9)=(3 x 5) + (3 x 8) + (3 x 9)

9(8+7)
9 x 8 = 72
9 x 7 = 63
72+ 63 = 135
135
theres the first one for u!
good luck!
2. 4(x+9)=x(4+9)
3.5(y+20)=y(5+20)
4.0(x+12)=x(0+20)
5.r(s+t)=s(r+t)
6.3(5+8+9)=5(3+8+9)
just switch two of the numbers and create a new equation.
You multiply the number OUTSIDE the bracket by each term inside the bracket and use whatever math function is inside the bracket
5(x-y) for example means to first multiply 5 times x and then subtract 5 times y
so 5x-5y
in your question 5(y+20)
first multiple 5times y and add 5 times 20
5y+100
> in #2. since you cant simplify further the #s inside the grouping symbol..ofcouse you cant add x and 9.. so proceed mow to multiplication..
its like this….
4(x+9)
4 times x plus 4 times 9.. simply distribute it..
the answer will be 4x + 36.
you may practice answering the other so that you will master it!!
goodluck!!
hope you understand i my explaination.
