A bowling league has 16 teams . During a single elimination tournament , the winner of each match goes on to the next round . How many matches does the winning team need to play ?

well the number of winning teams cuts in half each time
16 > 8 > 4 > 2 > 1
so the number one team would play one team when there’s 16 teams, 1 team when there’s 8 teams, 1 teams when there’s 4 teams and 1 team when there’s 2 teams. leaving themselves as the last one. so they would play 4 matches.
