Help with a persuasive Paper for English 1301?

Overview:

This assignment requires you to take a position on a topic of your choosing. You must not write a pepr that is primarliy informative-The object is to write an argument that is aimed at persuading your audience. Keep in mind that, as with all of your papers, your audince will be diverse, and you are primarily writing to those who do not necessarily agree with your position. Therefore select a topic

1) With which you will be able to avoid extreme or overly emotional reactions; and

2)For which you will be able to see the logic of all sides, and argue for an actual soultion instead of finding a comfortable position within an established political or religious faction.

What should I do? I am so lost!!

I had to do the same thing and I chose Affirmative Action. The issue can be controversial, but it is also a very logical topic. There is also a plethora of information out there about it. Avoid taking a side, and instead offer solutions. One side thinks that it isn’t enough and that reparations for slavery should be given, and the other side argues that it promoted inequality amongst the masses instead of fair competition. To argue against the reparations side, it is always important to look at the ideology of Martin Luther King, Jr. who wanted equality and not reparations. For the other side, suggest that in some areas of the nation, inequality still occurs, and there it is often useful. This is an extremely successful topic for any persuasive argument you make as long as you do your research.
