Yuppy kid! =P Roxzzz….

Help with a debate?

We’re having a debate at school and i am one of the speakers. The third speaker actually. The topic or theme is, “The way you dress reveals your character.”

I’m in the proposition. Are there any quotes or points that supports this statement??? Thank you for generously spending your time to help me out! =)

I work at a large engineering firm…

I can tell you that the people who have lower tier jobs generally do not dress well. Those i have seen dress better actually have received promotions, etc because management recognizes the little more effort (e.g. clothing styles) as a positive sign.

Some say “appearances aren’t everything” or are they. How about “dress for success” “dress for the job you want , not the one you have” “clothes make the man”. Even pop culture has addressed this one like in the movie “Working Girl” (starring Harrison Ford, Melanie Griffith, and Sigourney Weaver) where a bright intelligent young woman is ignored and not taken seriously until she dresses up and plays the part. Until then she’s considered a dumb secretary. After all, right or wrong, good or bad, we do base our first impressions on appearances. We make judgments based upon what we see, and it’s human nature. We see a badly or shabbily dressed person on the street, and we think “bum”. If a nicely dressed person walks up to you to ask a question you are going to be more apt to give them time, then should a street person do the same.

Yeah I don’t think the way we dress reveals your character. I dress for my mood. How ever I feel on the day. Sometimes I dress like a slob and my house is tidy. I have friends that spend to much time on themselves (hair and clothes etc) rather then there homes. One point though is we are all human. You’ll never pick a person by what they wear.

I think the way you dress affects the way you reveal yourself. If you are on the conservative side, they mistaken you to be socially inept for the reason they think you’re dressing up like a (nun) all covered up.but if you dress the opposite which most of these days are fashionable to the teen-agers, they will classify you a very sociable, vivacious kind of a person. You are really showing yourself to get attention to everyone that they will notice you at first glance. If I were you I will just be moderate not too sexy & not too old fashioned either. That’s the best way to get noticed & respect & looking very smart & be like a responsible teen-ager.I was very conservative during my time & until now I don’t wear sexy clothes, but it’s just the way I am brought up during the early years.

You could talk about how there are groups that have a type of dressing(goth, skinheads etc), and that the way you dress can say something about you (like to look good, love comfort etc.). Although it may not always be true, as the proposition you have to sound absolutely convinced. Hence you could approach some sterotypes that have proven themselves true.

For example, certain types of shoes(Manilows I think…I only know because it was in a National Geographic article about the evolution of footwear) are known to fans as ‘limo shoes’ because they look beautiful, but are absolutely not made for walking. But women who are concerned with looking good do not mind sacrificing their comfort. If they are not so much concered about looking good as much as fitting in, that is another point about their character that may be addressed.

You could look to your peers as examples. What kind of people wear ‘in’ shoes and branded clothes, and what kind of people wear comfortable sneakers and cotten tees are a start.

“The way you dress reveals your character”

Example- when a women wears very revealing clothes- it shows she is a sl*t. If a person dresses like a slob- they aren’t neat and organized.

of course… if you wear very sexy and revealing clothes, it only shows that you are the type of person who is fond of flirting or showing.. i guess.. on contrary, when wearing close clothes on, it shows that you are concerned and conservative.. people nowadays judge you by the way you dress and by the way you talk..
