Agriculture including forestry and fishery plays a dominant role in the Philippine economy.

The country’s population is predominantly rural (70 percent of the total), and agriculture

contributes about 20 percent to the country’s economy. Two-thirds of the country’s population

depends on farming for its livelihood, and about half of the labor force is engaged in

agricultural activities. While Philippine agriculture is characterized by a mixture of small,

medium and large farms, the majority of the farms are small, averaging about 2 hectares

and are managed by single families ranging from subsistence to commercial production.

Four commodities: rice, corn, livestock and poultry account for about 76 percent of the

country’s gross agricultural production.

The Philippines is one of 11 developing countries — and one of the first countries in Asia — to provide genetically modified (GM) crops to their farmers. In 2003, commercial planting of insect-protected (Bt) corn was an immediate success with farmers who witnessed perhaps the most significant benefits to date due to better control of persistently high infestations levels of Asian corn borers in this tropical climate.

On the average, Banga’s corn production yields 25,600 metric tons per cropping season or 76,800 metric tons per annum. Corn can be harvested three times a year in the Phillipines, since a cropping season last only from three to four months.
