Hardships faced by the settlers:

• The site they chose to live on was marshy and lacked safe drinking water.

• The settlers lacked some skills necessary to provide for themselves.

• Many settlers died of starvation and disease

Well, the colonists are the first (save for the “Lost Colony” of Roanoke) so they don’t really have anything to go on. They have to figure out how to grow food (or hunt food) on completely unfamiliar territory. They have to learn to protect against the harsh jamestown winters, so that they can prevent diseases.

Out of the original 100 colonists that came from England, only 60 survived the sea journey.

By 1625, over 8,000 people had attempted to settle in Jamestown. Only 1,200 of those colonists survived. Due to lack of food, colonists were reduced to eating cats, dogs, rats, and even other people.

They had land problems: it was a swampy area that the colonists didn’t really know how to use to their advantage. This swampy marsh area also led to rampant disease (like malaria).

They had labor problems: everyone wanted to be a leader, not a worker. Native weren’t good for labor, because they died from disease easily, and (knowing the terrain better) could run away.

Leadership problems: as already stated, everyone wanted to be a leader, so they didn’t really have a leader (until John Smith and John Rolfe)
