Great White Sharks Statistics HOMEWORK HELP. Please.?

Although dangerous, some scientists have collected data on the varying lengths of great white sharks. Those that survived found the following lengths in feet:

18.7 12.3 18.6 16.4 15.7 18.3 14.6 15.8 14.9 17.6 12.1

16.4 16.7 17.8 16.2 12.6 17.8 13.8 12.2 15.2 14.7 12.4

13.2 15.8 14.3 16.6 9.4 18.2 13.2 13.6 15.3 16.1 13.5

19.1 16.2 22.8 16.8 13.6 13.2 15.7 19.7 18.7 13.2 16.8

a) Describe the distribution of these lengths.

b) Compare the mean with the median. Does this support your assessment of the distribution?

c) Are there any outliers? If so, what are they?

d) Would you consider this distribution approximately normal?

What percentage of the data is within 1 standard deviator of the mean? What percentage of data is within 2 standard deviation of the mean?

e) Do you think the data is approximately normal?

*Any help at all, is greatly appreciated. THANKS!

the mean is 15.58636

the median is 15.75.

the standard deviation is 2.549928

the inner quartile range is 17 – 13.575 = 3.425

the inner quartile range of the standard normal is 1.349

3.425 / 1.349 = 2.538913 which is close to the standard deviation of the sample. this is some evidence to support that the data is normal.

better evidence is to create a probability or quantile quantile plot. if you do this you’ll see that there is only one outlier (22.8 is the value) but there is no evidence to say the data is not normal other than that.

I would say that there is no evidence to suggest that the data is not approximately normal.
