age and strength do matter. If you have all the courage in the world but need to lift a heavy object off of someone you aren’t likely to succeed, sometimes strength matters. In the beginning of world war II the Nazis sent waves of bombers, fighter planes, tanks, and heavily armed infantry onto the battlefield. The Poles sent cavalry against them. It took tremendous courage to ride on horseback with a sword to fight a tank and machine guns. Courage wasn’t enough, the Poles were slaughtered.

But then, there are times when courage has meant the difference. The Polish Resistence, just as that in France and elsewhere in WWII had little other than courage and determination, but managed to inflict real harm on the invading Germans. Sometimes a smaller animal can fight off a larger one just by standing its ground and being brave, making the bigger one think that its more danger than its worth. Think of times that generals, such as northern civil war US generals, had the advantage in power and supplies but let it slip away because the enemy was brave and the stronger generals lacked courage and confidence.

What is it about courage that succeeds?

Is it how it gives determination?

Stamina?

How it surprises those threatening you?

Does it give its own strength?

But is it always enough? Are there times when courage in the face of overwhelming odds only gets you hurt or killed?
