together they will finish 1/3+1/2 of the work = 5/6

so they will finish the whole job in 6/5 hrs = 1.2 hrs = 1 hr, 12 mins

there’s actually an equation for these kind of problems

and it’s like

(a X b) / (a + b)

so…if (a) was james and (b) was frank, just plug ’em in

u would have 6 / 5 = 1.2

*u can try using this equation for similar problems! like this kinda..

if james takes 1 hour to mow the lawn and frank takes 1.5 hours to mow the lawn, how long would it take if they were both working together? .6 hours =P

Think of it this way:

Let F = Frank’s speed. How quickly does Frank work? He can type 1 report in 2 hours, so his speed is F = (1 report/2 hours) = 0.5 reports/hr. I’ll let you find James’s speed J reports/hr.

Since Frank’s speed is 0.5 reports/hr., that means that after one hour of Frank working alone, 0.5 reports will be completed. After 1 hour of working alone, James will complete J reports.

Their speed together is (F+J) reports/hr. After one hour of work, the pair would have completed (F+J) reports. So how many hours would it take to finish one full report? That’s your answer.

Actually, that 2.5 hours would give you two reports: Frank would type his and then help James.

Try 1.25–although that’s not really practical, since James wouldn’t know where to start, page breaks, and all that.
