Here’s how I solved them. First I converted the whole number and fraction pair [2 1/5] into improper fraction i.e made them into fractions by multiplying the whole number (2) with the denominator (5) and adding the product to numerator (1). I did the same with the other term. Then I subtracted the first term from the second term by taking the least common multiple of the denominator ( I am not sure what they call doing this in your school). Then solved the subtraction. And got the answer. Same with the second problem. But its answer was in improper fraction (numerator higher than denom) so I converted it to proper fractions by dividing the numerator by denom. The quoteint is the whole number part and the divsor becomes denom and remainder is the numerator.

2 1/5 – 1 1/4 = (10+1)/5 – (4+1)/4 = 11/5 + 5/4 =

((11)(4) + (5)(5))/20 = 69/20.

2 5/8 + 1 5/12 = (16+5)/8 + (12+5)/12 = 21/8 + 17/12

Common denom is 24, smallest number divisible by both 8 and 12, so we continue:

= ((3)(21) + (17)(2))/24 = 97/24.

If the highest common factor between numerator and denominator was more than 1 in the final result, you’d need one more step to divide both num and denom by that factor.

1 1/4 equals 5/4

so the answer for first question is 19/20

2 5/8 equals 21/8

1 5/12 equals 17/12

so second answer is 29/24

or 1 5/24

Second is 1.21 fraction is 29/24 which is 1 5/24
