A benchmark in the context you are talking is a mark made on a stationary object. This object has a pre-determined position and elevation and is used as a reference point, often in tidal observations and surveys. I am not sure of where you can find the address of one, maybe call a surveyors office. Now that you hopefully have a better understanding of what a benchmark is you can find one more easily.

The people you need to get in contact with are The National Geodetic Survey. Here is their website –

http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/datasheet.prl

It will be easiest to call them and explain to them that you’re a student who needs to take a picture of a benchmark disk for a class, instead of searching for one. They’ll know of one that’s easy to get to – like at City Hall or something. (The phone number is at the bottom of the web page).

Good luck.
