The biggest problem, as Martin Luther saw it, was the practice of the Catholic Church to grant “indulgences” These were pieces of paper which were sold to people and supposedly granted them a passage into heaven, bypassing an area called purgatory. Purgatory was a place midway between earth and heaven where souls would suffer until they had rid themselves of all sins, then they could enter heaven.

Luther was also very upset at a practice called ‘simony’ which involved the selling of church positions up to and including the position of pope.
