essay on John Locke & Natural Rights?

i have to do a paper on john locke and his natural rights idea. well honestly i have no clue about john locke, and the articles that i read about him arent exactly what im looking for and plus its just alot to read, so im asking for you guys to put it in simple terms please?

the main thing i need answered is why were they included in The Declaration of Independence? and how did it change the way the colonists thought?

I’m not really sure is this is exactly the answer you’re looking for, but here it goes:

Locke believed that in their natural state, men had freedom and independence, but they could not hinder another person’s freedom or independence. He also advocated checks and balances and thought that in some instances a revolution was needed.

It was included into the Declaration of Independence mainly because the people who wrote the Declaration, notably Thomas Jefferson, were Locke FREAKS! They read his works all the time!

I’m not sure how it changed the colonists’ way of thinking, but it sure rationalized their separation from Great Britain.
