Erica has quiz scores of 88, 84, 92, 63, & 85 Wat does she need on the next quiz to have at least a C average?

I need an answer for this problem. Might sound easy but my teacher never showed us how to do this problem he just gave us the worksheet. He’s really bad at teaching math. Help..

Ok…what’s a C? Suppose it’s 80%.

Multiply your 80 by 6. 480. That’s what your total needs to be to average a C. Your current scores total 412. So, you’d need a 68 to average 80%.

Substitute in whatever a C actually is for 80, and work the same way.

You find the average sum of the known grades and then add in whatever the most recent test result is and divide all by 6. 88+84+92+63+85=412. Let’s say she gets a 60 on the next test, add that to 412 and divide by 6 andher average would be 78.6. So we know she can get below 60, assuming 70 is a C. So try 50 on her next test. That is 77. If she got 20 on the next she would have a 72 average. When you complete the trial and error you discover that she can get as low as 8 on her next quiz and still get n average of 70, a C.

First, what’s a C? You need to have a number for the lowest grade that is a C. Let’s say, just for example, it’s a 75.

After the next quiz, there will be six grades. When you add up those six grades and divide by 6, the answer will have to be 75 or more.

Now let’s work backwards. 75 times 6 is 450, so the total of the six grades will have to be 450. Add the first five grades together and subtract that total from 450. The answer will be the grade she needs on the last quiz.

Sometimes teachers aren’t bad at teaching — they just want to see if you can think for yourself instead of being spoon-fed the answers like a mother feeding a baby.

Well first you need to get the average of those numbers, which you add them all up and get 412, and then divide by 5 because that’s how many scores there were and you get 82.4….so she’d need at least that to keep the same score….but you can try adding scores to the 82.4 number, like do 82.4 and then she got a 70, it would be 152.4 divided by 2 is 76.2, and that’s still a C average….but I’m not sure what would happen if they were all weighted differently, like one being worth 20%, 10% etc…

Here’s how you do it…

equation is this:

In this equation, x is what you want to find (The grade she needs).

(88 + 84 + 92 + 63 + 85 + x)/6 = 80

412 + x = 480

in this equation x would be 68 only!

Therefore the answer is 68%!

(I said used “80” as a C grade, because I don’t know what you consider a C….. =])

HOPE THAT HELPS!!! =]
