Ellen Foster?

I have to read Ellen Foster for summer reading. Does anyone understand what the overall message of the story is?

Pretty much it’s about a girl who lives in a crummy environment and it takes place back in the 60s, I think. Her mother died (her father convinced her mother to take too many pills and then go to sleep and didn’t call for help, so she died). Ellen feels so attached to her mom that she stays in bed lying next to her dead mother until she is forced to move. Anyway, her father is white trash and he treats her badly, but she has one friend who is the african-american girl down the street, against the approval of her father, so she eventually decides to run away. She tries to live with her aunt, but her aunt only keeps her for a week or so. Then she goes to the “Foster family’s” house that she heard about at church where the woman takes in all kinds of children. Then she lives happily ever after. There really isn’t an overall message except maybe that if you have belief and take action, you can get what you want.

It is a heartwarming story about a girl with a kitten who falls in love with a boy down the street but, unfortunately, the girl gets pregnant and somehow the baby gets switched for the kitten. Long story, but it is very interesting. I read it three times. I am not going to tell you about how it comes out, that would ruin the suspense, but I will give you a hint: police cars, bullets, sirens, and a very disturbed individual.
