I am sure there were many reasons – for therapy, to record what happened so that hopefully it will never happen again, to remind the world of the tragedy that was allowed to happen while many people looked on, as a tribute to his family that died, etc.

I have given you the link to Oprah’s book club information on this novel. I think you’ll find it very helpful and insightful. There is an interview with Elie Wiesel as well.

Night is a work by Elie Wiesel based on his experience, as a young Orthodox Jew, of being sent with his family to the German death camp at Auschwitz, and later to the concentration camp at Buchenwald.

I am sure that he did not want to have what happened be lost over time… as awful as it was we need to know about it, and realize what happened. We meaning you and I and future generations.

I cannot speak for him but I am sure that he also felt compelled to share the incredible brutality, it would not be conceivable on our own.

It also showed the human spirit – it’s greatest ugliness and also its incredible strength (by those who were prisoners).

In one book, one situation we see the worst imaginable, but also see those who were able to endure it and keep some measure of their faith and love for man. Amazing.

It had to be written… I have to admit I understood the events as I read it but did not fully grasp the horror.

I am thankful the book was written though.
