[C] x + 5 [D] 3x + 5

2. Simplify: 6x + 5− x + 2

[A] 7x + 3 [B] 5x + 7

[C] 7x + 7 [D] 5x + 3

3. Simplify: 8x − 3+ 4x − 2

Like terms means simply to put together the terms that have the same power.

1) 2x and x have the same power. They are both to the 1st power so you combine those to get 3x. The 6 and the -1 will be combined because they are similar, they have no variables and no degree powers to get 3x+5

2) combine 6x+-x to get 5x. Then the 5+2 to get 7. Answer being 5x+7

3)The 8x and 4x are combined to get 12x. The -3-2 are combined to get -5, the answer will be 12x-5

You combine the terms that are like; in other words, you combine the Xs with the Xs, and the Ys with the Ys, With numbers, you just add or subtract as necessary. It may help to rewrite the equations with everything grouped together first.

1. 2x + 6 + x – 1 = 2x + x + 6 – 1 = 3x + 5, [D]

2. 6x + 5 – x + 2 = 6x – x + 5 + 2 = 5x + 7, [B]

3. 8x – 3 + 4x – 2 =8x + 4x – 3 – 2 = 12x – 5, [B]
