I’m not sure what you mean by “the customary system”. Are you referring to the English system, the one based on the pound and inch? That one is not based on any one thing in particular. For instance, the furlong (furrow-long) is an acre divided by a rod. An acre is the amount of land an adult male can work in one day (“work” generally meaning “harvest”). A rod is the combined lengths of the the shod left feet of the first eleven adult males exiting church on Sunday morning.

… and the Kentucky Derby is eight furlongs (now known as the mile, coming from “mille”, one thousand paces of a Roman soldier on the march).

SI units are “Standard International”, aka the metric system. SI units are generally either mks (meter-kilogram-second) or cgs (centimeter-gram-second), depending on the magnitude of the applications in question.

Does that handle your question? Oh, yeah — the inch is the length of three barleycorns taken from the widest part of the sheaf of a mature beard (of barley, not of the farmer). The pound is … oh, never mind. You can look up the silliness on your own time, after the test.
